Two routes in one molecule
The molecule brings two routes of action together. Along the GLP-1 receptor it is, like semaglutide, linked to less appetite and slower gastric emptying. That sum is thought to produce a stronger metabolic response in research than a GLP-1 substance on its own. Nearly everything known about this comes from clinical studies.
One, two or three receptors
The three best-known metabolic peptides are easiest to order by the number of receptors they address. Semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, stays with GLP-1 alone. Tirzepatide adds GIP and so reaches two. Retatrutide lays the glucagon receptor on top of that and reaches three. In mechanism, then, tirzepatide sits squarely in the middle. One difference weighs more than the mechanism: semaglutide and tirzepatide are approved medicines, retatrutide is not yet. How does this differ from Mounjaro and Zepbound?
Mounjaro and Zepbound are the brand names under which Eli Lilly has this substance dispensed on prescription, as a pre-filled pen through the pharmacy.
