What kind of compound is this?
Survodutide belongs to the dual incretin agonists, meaning it addresses two receptors at once: the GLP-1 one and the glucagon one. Development sits with Boehringer Ingelheim and Zealand Pharma, and in research it is mainly in view around obesity and fatty liver disease, called MASH in the literature. Unlike the best-known compounds in this class it has no approval yet: it is in Phase 3.
What the glucagon route adds
Two routes of action sit here in one molecule. Along the GLP-1 receptor it is, like semaglutide, linked to less appetite and slower gastric emptying. Along the glucagon receptor it is thought that energy expenditure rises and that fat metabolism in the liver is engaged. It is precisely that glucagon component that sets survodutide apart from the pure GLP-1 compounds, and it is also why the fatty-liver research draws so much attention. Nearly everything known about this comes from clinical studies.
Two receptors or three: the difference from retatrutide
These two names often fall together, because both belong to the new generation of metabolic research peptides. The distinction is the number of receptors: survodutide stays with GLP-1 and glucagon, retatrutide adds GIP and reaches three. In research survodutide stands out mainly for the focus on the liver, retatrutide for the weight effects from early studies. If you want to place them side by side, retatrutide is in the range separately. We supply single vials, no pre-mixed combinations.
Why this is not Ozempic or Mounjaro
Online, survodutide is sometimes called the little brother of Ozempic, but the action runs differently. Semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, stays with GLP-1. Tirzepatide, known as Mounjaro, couples GLP-1 to GIP. Survodutide instead couples GLP-1 to glucagon, a route neither of the others uses, and that is where the particular attention to the liver comes from. One further difference weighs more: semaglutide and tirzepatide are approved medicines, survodutide is not.
Where the research currently stands
The compound is in Phase 3, the last stage before any approval is sought. That runs in two programmes at once: SYNCHRONIZE in obesity and LIVERAGE in MASH, in full metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, a form of fatty liver. For that last indication the US FDA granted a Breakthrough Therapy designation in 2024. Approval is nowhere in place at present; what is known sits in the studies and the medical literature.
