Semax stems from a fragment of ACTH, the hormone released under stress, topped with a short tail that makes the molecule more stable. Little of the hormonal action of ACTH remains in it; what remains is the part studied in Russian research around attention, memory and brain function. What semax research turns on
Semax is best known in research circles as a nootropic: a substance studied around focus, memory and mental clarity. It is thought to support attention and learning without the stimulating, wired feeling of, say, caffeine. From ACTH fragment to brain research
Semax is a heptapeptide derived from a fragment of the hormone ACTH. It is thought to raise the production of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), a protein important for the growth and maintenance of nerve cells. It also appears to influence the dopamine and serotonin systems, which explains the link to attention and mood. Most of the research comes from Russia and from animal models.

Semax ships as a lyophilised vial that you mix yourself with bacteriostatic water. In the literature it is usually studied in short courses of several days, often once or twice a day; the exact protocols vary by study. What is legally allowed, and is a prescription needed?
Semax is a registered medicine in Russia (studied for stroke and cognition, among other things), but in the Netherlands and most Western countries it is not approved as a medicine. As a research-grade peptide, however, it may simply be bought and held for laboratory research. So a prescription is not relevant here, nor is consumption.
