What MOTS-c research turns on
MOTS-c is sometimes called "exercise in a vial". It is an unusual peptide that is made naturally in your mitochondria, the power plants of your cells, and in research it is studied mainly for metabolism, energy and ageing. It is thought to mimic many of the effects you would normally only get from exercise: better fat burning, more energy and a healthier insulin response.
Signals out of the mitochondrion
MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide: it is encoded directly in the DNA of your mitochondria. It switches on a key energy sensor in your cells, AMPK, which puts the body into "energy-building mode". It is thought this route is why research links MOTS-c to better insulin sensitivity, fat burning and endurance. Most of the evidence comes from animal and lab studies.
The link to metabolism
The best-known research line around MOTS-c is about metabolism. In animal studies it is linked to "metabolic flexibility", the body's ability to switch easily between sugar and fat for fuel, and to less belly fat and insulin resistance. That is why researchers sometimes call it an "exercise mimetic": something that mimics the effects of exercise. There are no firm claims in humans yet.
