SS-31 is a short peptide of four amino acids with one striking property: it gathers in the inner membrane of the mitochondria, the energy plants of the cell. There it binds cardiolipin, a lipid that governs the shape and function of that membrane. In the literature you will also meet it under the name elamipretide. We supply it as a research-grade vial at ≥99% HPLC purity, dispatched the same working day from the Netherlands.
What kind of peptide is this?
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide, a small protein of just four amino acids, that targets the mitochondria, the energy-producing parts of the cell. What makes it distinctive is that it selectively reaches the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds there to cardiolipin, a lipid important for energy production. In research, SS-31 is therefore studied around mitochondrial function and cell energy. The substance is also known as elamipretide.
Cardiolipin as the point of action
The mitochondria produce energy (ATP) using structures in their inner membrane called cristae. Cardiolipin holds those structures in place. SS-31 binds to cardiolipin and is linked in research to keeping that membrane structure stable, protecting energy production and reducing oxidative stress (harmful reactive oxygen species). In short: it targets the "charging point" of the cell. It is thought that this supports mitochondrial function; most of this comes from laboratory and animal models.
Why the energy plants
Mitochondria become less efficient as cells age, and that is exactly why SS-31 attracts so much attention in the research world. Preclinical studies have looked at the role of the substance in age-related changes in energy metabolism, for example the restoration of ATP production in aged muscle tissue. That makes SS-31 a much-discussed topic in longevity research. Important: these are research findings, not established effects in humans. Elamipretide and Forzinity: where things stand
SS-31 has a second life as a medicine. Under the name elamipretide, the substance was developed by Stealth BioTherapeutics, and in 2025 it received accelerated approval from the US FDA, under the brand name Forzinity, as the first treatment for the rare Barth syndrome, a hereditary mitochondrial disorder. That approval applies specifically to that one rare disease. What BasePurity supplies is something different: not the medicine Forzinity, but SS-31 as a research-grade peptide for laboratory use. The substance is the same, the context entirely different, a research vial is not intended for human use and does not replace a prescription or medical supervision.
What is reported about tolerability?
In clinical research with elamipretide, the substance is generally described as well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effect is an injection-site reaction (redness, irritation); serious side effects were rare in the studies. These are observations from medical research under supervision, not data that says anything about laboratory use. Making it up and storing it
SS-31 is supplied as a lyophilised powder in a vial. For research it is mixed with bacteriostatic water; BasePurity gives no dosing or administration advice. Store the unopened vial dry, dark and cool. After mixing, the solution goes in the fridge (2–8 °C), protected from light, and is used within a short time; for longer storage the unopened vial can go in the freezer.
