SNAP-8 is an octapeptide of eight amino acids and an extended variant of the better-known Argireline. The research aims at the way muscle fibres in the skin receive their signal, and so at expression lines. We supply it as a research-grade vial at ≥99% HPLC purity, dispatched the same working day from the Netherlands.
What SNAP-8 research turns on
SNAP-8 is best known in cosmetic research around expression lines, the wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement, such as frown lines and creases around the eyes. It is thought to act on the signal transfer that makes the small facial muscles contract, via the so-called SNARE complex. Because of this it is described in the literature as a topical, non-invasive route that moves in the direction of what injections aim for, but without a needle.
The SNARE complex as the point of action
SNAP-8 (Acetyl Octapeptide-3) is derived from the N-terminal end of SNAP-25, a protein that plays a key role in the SNARE complex. That complex is needed to release vesicles containing the messenger acetylcholine at the nerve-to-muscle junction. It is thought that SNAP-8 competes with this complex and so inhibits the release of acetylcholine, which would make muscle contraction weaker. It is precisely this mechanism that is studied in cosmetic research; most of the work comes from in-vitro and formulation studies.
Two amino acids longer than Argireline
SNAP-8 and Argireline are often mentioned together, because they act on the same route. The difference is in the length: Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, formerly Acetyl Hexapeptide-3) has six amino acids, SNAP-8 has eight. SNAP-8 was developed as an extended variant, and supplier literature claims a stronger interaction with the SNARE complex. Independent comparative studies between the two are limited, however, so the claim "stronger than Argireline" rests mainly on manufacturer data. Why the botox comparison does not hold
SNAP-8 is often called "botox in a bottle" online. That nickname refers to the idea that the peptide, like botulinum toxin, affects signal transfer to muscles, but the resemblance is limited and the action is very different. Botox is a medicine that is injected and blocks the nerve for a long time; SNAP-8 is a cosmetically studied peptide applied topically that would have at most a mild, temporary effect on the signal route. The two are not interchangeable.
From raw material to formulation
On the market you mostly encounter SNAP-8 processed into finished serums and creams, usually at a low concentration and combined with other ingredients. In research it is also combined with related peptides such as GHK-Cu or Leuphasyl to study several routes at once. Making it up and storing it
SNAP-8 is supplied as a lyophilised powder in a vial. For research it is mixed with distilled water or a cosmetic-grade buffer; BasePurity gives no dosing or administration advice, because we supply it solely as a research peptide. Store the unopened vial dry, dark and cool. After mixing, the solution goes in the fridge (2–8 °C), protected from light; for longer storage the vial can go in the freezer (−20 °C).
