What is GHK-Cu research about?
Research into GHK-Cu centres on the skin. It is a copper peptide the body makes itself and whose levels fall away over the years, which is exactly why it turns up in studies on ageing. It is thought to have a hand in the production of collagen and elastin. That puts it among the most studied peptides in cosmetic science. What does the copper actually do?
It all turns on the copper ion. GHK-Cu binds it and so behaves as a kind of ferryman delivering copper to the cells, copper that enzymes around connective tissue need. Research holds that the peptide prompts the fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen and elastin. The bulk of that knowledge comes from cell and skin research.
Why is this called a true peptide?
Plenty of substances pass as "peptides" while really being small molecules. GHK-Cu is not one of them: it is a genuine tripeptide, three amino acids (glycyl-histidyl-lysine) coupled to a copper ion. That copper is what gives a dissolved vial its blue-purple colour, a normal feature of the copper complex and not a contamination. Within peptide research, copper peptides form a branch of their own, with the skin as the main field of study.
GHK-Cu next to AHK-Cu: skin versus hair
Both are copper peptides, but research puts the emphasis differently. With GHK-Cu, glycine at the front, the subject is skin: collagen, elastin, connective tissue. With AHK-Cu, alanine at the front, the subject is the hair follicle. In research they sometimes appear side by side, the skin side and the hair side of the same family. GHK-Cu exists in two guises: worked into a serum or cream on the skincare shelf, and as a pure research-grade vial. We deliberately go for the second. A finished serum holds a low concentration of GHK-Cu topped up with fragrance, preservatives and the rest of the formulation; our vial holds the freeze-dried peptide itself, so you set your own concentration in the lab. Researchers would rather work from that pure starting point than from a finished cosmetic product.
