What kind of peptide is this?
AHK-Cu, also known as copper tripeptide-3, is a synthetic peptide made of three amino acids, alanine, histidine and lysine, that together hold a copper ion. The name comes from those three amino acids (A-H-K) plus the copper (Cu). In cosmetic research it is mainly in view around the hair follicle and the scalp. It is closely related to GHK-Cu, but with a different focus.
What the copper ion does
AHK-Cu is a copper complex: the peptide binds a copper ion and delivers it in a targeted way. Copper plays a role in many processes around connective tissue and blood vessels. In research around the hair follicle, it is thought that AHK-Cu signals the cells of the hair papilla, the dermal papilla cells that play a key role in the hair growth cycle. Most of what is known about this comes from preclinical lab work, not from large studies in humans.
One amino acid apart from GHK-Cu
AHK-Cu and GHK-Cu are often mentioned together, because both are tripeptide copper complexes. The difference is one amino acid: GHK-Cu starts with glycine, AHK-Cu with alanine. That small difference shifts the focus in research, GHK-Cu is mainly known around skin regeneration and collagen, AHK-Cu around the hair follicle. Why the hair follicle
AHK-Cu is often mentioned online in the context of hair growth, but it is important to be honest about the data. Most of it comes from early, preclinical research, including a much-cited lab study from 2007, and from theory about the copper route in the follicle. Broad, well-designed studies in humans are scarce. AHK-Cu is therefore not a proven treatment for hair loss; the substances for which that is established (such as minoxidil and finasteride) work in a different way. From raw material to formulation
On the market you mostly encounter AHK-Cu as an ingredient in scalp serums and tonics, often together with GHK-Cu, and as raw powder for do-it-yourself (DIY) formulations. Making it up and storing it
AHK-Cu is supplied as a lyophilised powder in a vial. For research it is mixed with distilled water or a buffer; BasePurity gives no dosing or administration advice, because we supply it solely as a research peptide. A reconstituted AHK-Cu vial has a characteristic blue colour, this comes from the copper complex and is normal, not a sign of contamination. Store the unopened vial dry, dark and cool (for longer storage the dry vial can go in the freezer); after mixing, the solution goes in the fridge (2–8 °C), protected from light, and not in the freezer.
