Glutathione (GSH) is a small tripeptide of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine found in nearly every cell, where it is the main antioxidant the body makes itself. It scavenges reactive oxygen species, helps neutralise waste products and keeps other antioxidants in their active form. Because the supply falls away with ageing, illness and strain, it is widely researched. What glutathione research turns on
Glutathione is the antioxidant the cell itself leans on. It keeps the balance between the reduced form (GSH) and the oxidised form (GSSG), and that ratio is a common lab measure of oxidative stress. That is why it shows up in research on the liver, the skin, the immune system and ageing. At BasePurity you buy it purely as a research material, not for use in humans.
Three amino acids with an unusual bond
The molecule is built from glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, but the first amino acid is attached through a gamma-glutamyl bond rather than an ordinary peptide bond. That is why most peptidases leave it alone. Cells make it themselves in two energy-consuming steps, with the availability of cysteine setting the pace. It is also why the precursor NAC so often appears alongside glutathione in studies.
What it does in the cell
Glutathione is the fuel for two groups of enzymes. The glutathione peroxidases neutralise peroxides, and the glutathione S-transferases attach the molecule to foreign compounds so they can be cleared, so-called phase II detoxification. It also returns vitamins C and E to their active form and acts as a signalling molecule by binding temporarily to proteins. Most of what is known comes from cell and animal studies.
Skin and pigment: where the attention comes from
Much of the interest comes from pigmentation research. In cell studies glutathione inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase and shifts melanin production from dark eumelanin towards lighter pheomelanin. In human studies, mostly with capsules, creams or infusions outside our scope, the results are mixed and the evidence limited. The thiol group on cysteine is what makes glutathione active, but that same group oxidises easily once in solution.
